The National Union of Tunisian Women was the first women''s non-governmental organization to be created in independent Tunisia.

The UNFT was established in January 1956, just after home-rule was proclaimed. On August 13th 1956, women''s position in Tunisian society changed radically for the better with the adoption of the personal status code, a progressive legislation guarantee the rights of women.

Since its beginnings, the UNFT has worked to improve women''s status, in society and under the law.
