What We Do

Founded in 1961, AED is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to solving critical social problems and building the capacity of individuals, communities, and institutions to become more self-sufficient. AED works in all the major areas of human development, with a focus on improving education, health, and economic opportunities for the least advantaged in the United States and developing countries throughout the world.

Ensuring Education for All
For more than 30 years AED has worked to increase access to quality education in the United States and more than 30 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. AED''s efforts have focused on improving teaching and learning, involving parents in schools, creating more opportunities for girls, supporting children with disabilities, and integrating technology into education.

Improving Health and Nutrition
AED promotes healthy behaviors and practices in the United States and 37 countries around the world. Through policy dialogue, behavior change strategies, communication campaigns, partnerships with the commercial sector, and strengthening local institutions, AED is improving the health of millions of people. Areas of emphasis include obesity, maternal and child health, malaria, and nutrition.

Promoting a Healthy Environment
Economic development depends on a healthy environment and stable sources of energy. AED works with partners ranging from government officials and community leaders to farmers, students, and the media, to identify and implement policies and actions that protect the environment, promote sustainable energy sources, and foster thriving economies.

Strengthening Leadership and Civil Society
To create lasting social change, societies must have stable civil and political structures.  AED gives local leaders the skills and tools they need to serve people effectively, efficiently and equitably; supports citizens to mobilize and influence policy; and connects individuals and groups to work together to improve lives.

Helping Youth reach their potential
When we engage young people in solving critical social problems, we tap a rich source of imagination that leads to innovative solutions. In areas ranging from education to governance to health, AED works with youth around the globe to give them the skills and confidence they need to meet the challenges and opportunities of our changing world.

Preventing and Treating HIV/AIDS
AED operates programs to combat HIV and AIDS in 25 countries and throughout the United States. Efforts focus on reducing stigma and discrimination, assisting caregivers of children orphaned by AIDS, increasing counseling and testing, preventing mother-to-child transmission, and reducing transmission through workplace prevention and education. AED is a leader in applying lessons learned in fighting the epidemic internationally to HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in the United States and vice versa.
