Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association
Activities and Programs

 Recreation : Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association''s recreation program provides members of all abilities the opportunity to participate in a wide range of recreational activities. The monthly activities are subsidised by the Association, and support staff ensure that all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the experience.

Gym and Fitness: Regular exercise can help make everyday living easier and more enjoyable. The benefits to your body are many and include increased fitness, better muscle strength, weight control and improved coordination and balance. Exercise can also help prevent injury and decrease stress. The role of exercise for people with disabilities can have wider health benefits, as it may help in the prevention and management of secondary health complications. However the benefits only exist while you are exercising. Therefore you should never give up exercise at any age. Maintaining a routine means you keep exercising which keeps you at your best.

Disability Education and Sports CONNECT

The Australian Sports Commission''s Disability Sport Unit has joined forces with Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association in Queensland and selected agencies in other states/territories to develop a new framework for inclusive sport in Australia from 1 July 2007.

The new framework is known as "Sports CONNECT - connecting sport and people with disabilities".

This involves the Association''s Disability Education team:

- working with sport and physical activity providers to prepare them for the inclusion of people with disabilities in their programs;

- working with disability service providers and their clients to raise the level of awareness about sport and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

The Association''s Disability Education team members are part of a national Disability Sport Network that is coordinated by the Australian Sports Commission to disseminate information, share ideas and provide support to anyone interested in sport and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

The Association''s involvement in Sports CONNECT aims to increase the range of opportunities for members with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity at the level of their choice.
