The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS)
History and Background

We are a professional association of nearly 800 educational and research institutions and individual scholars, teachers, and practitioners active in the work and study of multilateral relations, global governance, and international cooperation. Our field offices in Cairo, Delhi, Geneva, Marseille, New York, and Vienna, in addition to members located in over 50 countries, make us a global network. We have Category 1 Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC); NGO Affiliate status with the UN Department of Public Information; and acceditation to UNESCO. This status gives our members access to UN system meetings and libraries.

We focus special attention on the programs and agencies of the United Nations system and other intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations that play a role in managing common problems on the global agenda.

Our core activities promote research and teaching on the UN system and dialogue between and among academics and practitioners from across the globe.

Our Annual Meeting provides our members and friends with a unique opportunity to discuss UN-related research and policy. Each year, a prominent scholar or practitioner is invited to deliver the John Holmes Memorial lecture.

Our Summer Workshop, offered annually in partnership with the American Society for International Law (ASIL), brings together a small number of young scholars and UN practitioners to network and to examine issues of international organization.

Our interactive website will soon offer members the opportunity to post work in progress and get feedback from other ACUNS members; profile their book-length publications; and share ideas and resources for teaching, among other things.

Our Dissertation Award recognizes a promising young scholar whose research combines innovation and excellence.

Our quarterly Newsletter reminds members of upcoming events and allows members to circulate ideas in an informal format.

Our journal, Global Governance, published in association with Lynne Rienner Publishers presents the latest debates in the field and practice of international organization.
