Lebanese Council of Women
Activities and Programs

Since the end of the Lebanese Civil war in the early nineties the Lebanese Council of Women has been working diligently to widen its base and build alliances in order to support women’s rights and participate in the building of a sustainable society to meet the requirements and challenges of the new millennium.

Some of these activities were :
-  LCW was an active participant in the amendment of the Lebanese laws that were discriminatory against women
- LCW was an active participant in a project aiming at reviewing the Lebanese school books in order to remove concepts and ideas that discriminate against women.
- LCW conducted a series of professional training sessions for women in the various Lebanese regions.
- LCW has been actively participating in the promotion of human rights and democracy through the civil activities of its member organizations.
- LCW has been monitoring the parliamentary deliberations related to the inception of new laws and regulations and actively intervening with the parliament whenever some of these laws and regulations discriminate against women and do not insure equal rights for women.
- Prior to the Lebanese parliamentary elections, LCW held several workshops on parliamentary elections in collaboration with the National Committee for the follow up of Women’s issues after Beijing.
- Prior to the municipal elections LCW held several seminars and workshops to encourage women’s participation in local elections, whether as candidates or voters.
- In 2003 LCW organized with the support of the EU a national campaign for the promotion and involvement of Lebanese women in political life. The campaign included training workshops all over the Lebanese territories.
- In October 2002, LCW organized the “Arab women’s solidarity conference to confront the Challenges facing the Arab Women in the Present and Future especially in Palestine and Iraq”. A follow up committee was formed to overview the implementation of the resolutions.
- In 2002 LCW in cooperation and with the support of the European Union conducted a research project on the involvement of women in political life: reality and perspectives.
- In November 2000, LCW was an active participant to the First Summit Conference of Arab Women in Cairo.
- In 1999 LCW helped organize the First National Conference of the Civil Organization in Lebanon.
- LCW was an active participant in the preparation of the National Census Report of 1999.
- LCW, in collaboration with the Frederich Ebert Foundation organized sessions on women political empowerment.
- LCW held in 1998 and 1999 two Arab conferences on the issue of guaranteeing the rights of women to political participation through a system of Quotas.
