  • To gather reports of forced disappearance cases, and take steps designed to save lives and assure the physical integrity of disappeared persons, demanding that authorities exhaust all appropriate legal measures or assure the immediate release of unjustly detained individuals.
  • To issue urgent appeals to government authorities and transmit denunciations to competent international organizations, such as: the U.N. Commission on Human Rights and its Sub-Commission; the U.N. working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (which examines forced disappearance cases, communicates with governments, and produces annual reports attempting to resolve cases); relevant U.N. Special Rapporteurs on themes and countries; and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States.
  • To assist member Associations in the tasks of searching, organizing, interchanging experiences and publishing information on forced disappearance cases.
  • To oppose presidential pardons and other impunity measures for alleged perpetrators of forced disappearance or those found guilty of forced disappearance.
  • To develop and promote international solidarity with relatives of the detained and disappeared, including the formation of Support Groups in diverse countries.
When possible, to provide medical, psychological and social assistance to relatives of the detained and disappeared.
  • To produce reports and publications and to sponsor activities promoting international awareness of the grave problem of forced disappearance and the urgent need to eliminate this practice. Among FEDEFAM''''s annual activities is the International Week of the Detained and Disappeared, the last week of May.
  • To assist in drafting and promoting the adoption of international instruments in the United Nations and Inter-American Systems aimed at preventing forced disappearance, such as the Declaration on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced or Involuntary Disappearance (U.N.) and the Convention Against Forced Disappearances (O.A.S.).
