Malta Tourism Society
History and Background
The Socjeta Turistika Maltija (Malta Tourism Society) was set up in May 2002 by a number of individuals coming from various fields related to tourism, hotel management, planning and marketing.
The Society''s main objective is to provide a forum for professionals working in, studying or otherwise interested in tourism across all its sectors and to help improve and upgrade the Maltese and Regional tourism services and professionalism in the development of the sector. In contrast to other tourism associations, the Society aims to attract members from a diversity of sectors since the Society believes that to improve the tourism sector a forum whereby all stakeholders meet and discuss relevant issues is important.
The Society through its various events aims to bring together people from various fields of tourism to share experiences and to understand other facets of this complex activity other than their own so as to provide a basis for mutual understanding which would ultimately lead to a more concerted and co-ordinated approach to the development of tourism in the Maltese Islands.
In February 2009 the MTS was instrumental in setting up the Malta Tourism Action Group Forum (MTAG) between 28 NGOs and Attractions. The aim of this forum is to get stakeholders, from whichever sector or interest they may come, to work together to create an attractive and innovative quality tourism product and service. Late in 2009, the members of the MTAG will sign a memorandum of understanding that should lead to a more formal affiliation of its members that will lead to a more competitive tourism industry for these islands. Our aim is that in this year, dedicated to creativity and innovation for all EU Countries, we can also prove that there is a unique selling principle for tourism through diversity.
