Tawasul
Activities and Programs

Tawasul’s main goal is to adopt, enhance and support the concept and practice of non-violent, peaceful communication between people within and across societies.

Our Long-Term Goals towards which we will be dedicating our Efforts :
• Achieving equitable peace as the main value that people adopt for solving their personal conflicts as well as conflicts with their families, neighbours and society.
• Building a democratic society which has the ability to coexist with its neighbours; a society in which people can identify their own needs and work together to develop peaceful ways of meeting those needs.
• Building a society in which people listen, respect and communicate peacefully with each other, and promote tolerance for different views and values.
• Developing new productive relations between people and authority, public and government, as well as enhancing positive and constructive attitudes towards each other in order to serve the interest of people for a better life.

Our Supporters :
Tawasul board members include a broad spectrum of dignitaries across all political lines, religious authorities, business leaders and civil society professionals. Funding comes from concerned citizens as well as from respected foundations and governments, including the Canadian Fund and the US Institute for Peace.

Our Projects / Accomplishments :
Tawasul started its activities at the beginning of the current Intifada, “Uprising 2000”, by carrying out a contingency plan with other partner organisations. This plan had a very crucial role in meeting people’s basic needs through intensive coordination and collaboration with Palestinian NGOs such as PARC, Hydrology Group, PANORAMA, CARE and various public committees in different Palestinian governorates. Tawasul contributed to the establishment of the National Emergency Committee, also designed  to meet the urgent needs of Palestinians during the Israeli invasion of the West Bank.

Capacity building through training :
“Lobbying and Advocacy” training seminars: several training seminars about “lobbying, advocacy and leadership skills”; target young people between 18 and 30 years old coming from all West Bank governorates. The aim of these seminars was to provide participants with the necessary knowledge, tools and skills that would enable them to plan and implement mobilisation and public awareness campaigns as well as to organise public workshops and town hall meetings. The result of the project was an increased number of active volunteers ready and willing to implement different activities on the ground within the framework of Tawasul’s mission and objectives, aiming at a more peaceful and tolerant society.

Human Resources Development through training: the project’s broad aim was to develop governmental and non-governmental groups' capacity to play a more active role in community development and in supporting the development of democracy and the rule of law. The specific goal of this project was to develop the communication skills of 260 police officers in the Ramallah district through intensive training courses in communication, motivation and delegation. The project lasted for six months. Phase one targeted 100 police officers and phase two targeted 160 officers and investigators. The five intensive training courses of the project provided the participating officers with professional skills.

Democratisation Town Hall Meetings: we are conducting dozens of town hall meetings in different Palestinian cities and refugee camps. These town hall meetings are forums for open discussion during which people find the opportunity to express their concerns and formulate their questions. The meetings provide a healthy atmosphere for creative and constructive discussions, emphasising the significant role that the public can play in participating in the decision-making process.

2005 Projects and Activities :
1-Network for Democracy :
Tawasul helped to formulate a network in coordination with other Palestinian civil society organisations and private sectors united against violations of the law and against the use of violence to resolve internal conflicts. The mission of this network is to act as a lobby that monitors violations of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and to mobilize people to demand more political accountability. The network will also take action to prevent these violations and consequently protect and encourage civic peace within Palestinian society.

2-Network for Peace:
Tawasul is taking the initiative of creating a network of Palestinian NGOs working for peace. This network will ensure better results and a better impact in society thanks to joint actions and projects. The purpose of the network is o enhance the role of peace-building organisations and increase their influence on both the local and the  regional scene.

3-University 'Student Council' training:
This project is funded by the US Institute for Peace in partnership with CARE, “Centre for Applied Research and Education”. Its purpose is to enhance the role of non-violent communication as a viable alternative to resolve conflicts. The target is the representatives of student councils from the West Bank universities. Tawasul and CARE are cooperating to meet the urgent need of educating members of student councils in Palestinian universities in conflict resolution skills, since this is a group from which the future leadership is likely to be drawn.
