Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children
Mechanism of Operation

At Atfaluna School for the Deaf where Academic Deaf Special Education (Atfaluna Pre-School, Elementary School, and Middle School) is done :

Atfaluna offers academic education to 300 profoundly and severely deaf children and provides services to the children in the school section and for the community at large such as   Hearing Aid Fittings, Hearing Aid Repair and Ear-Mold Making. It conducts workshops focusing on hearing loss and its causes to assist parents in communicating with their deaf children. It also conducts workshops focusing on detection of hearing loss in the classroom for teachers.

1- Vocational Training Program  for the Deaf and Crafts Production :
Vocational training program and crafts production focus on training deaf and special needs persons in ten areas, namely woodworking, sewing, traditional embroidery, crafts assembly, traditional fabric weaving, traditional carpet-making, painting wooden furniture and crafts, pottery making, ceramics design. Graduates can be selected to head up or assist in vocational training program or can seek work opportunities in the community with the assistance of ASDC. The high-quality and creative crafts and small decorative home furnishings produced by the deaf and other persons of special needs preserve the traditional Palestinian crafts and historical designs. These creative and artistic items are marketed by ASDC through its existing on-site shop, web-page sales, and crafts exhibitions in the region and abroad. The deaf trainees have the opportunity to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills.

2- Hearing testing, Hearing Aid Fittings, Hearing Aid Repair and Ear-Mold Making :
Atfaluna's Audiology team includes audiologists, testing technicians and social workers who serve both outpatients of different ages and children in the school section. The department offers hearing testing, hearing aid fittings, hearing aid repair and ear-mold making. Moreover, ASDC distributes free-of-charge to needy children and adults. The society conducts free hearing testing days to people of different ages coming mainly from villages and refugee camps of the Gaza Strip.     

3- Speech and Language Pathology Section :
Speech and Language Pathology Department headed by qualified therapist, offers therapy for children of different ages with speech and language problems and delay.

4- Social work services and Counseling for Deaf Children and Adults and Their Families :
Case Management, and Client Advocacy unit offers social assistance, health care, education, and other forms of community services for deaf children and adults and their families. This unit is headed by qualified case workers who have experience in social work or social services for the deaf and / or special needs persons. The Case Management, and Client Advocacy unit functions are: 
1- Assists deaf persons and their families who come on a daily basis to ASDC and help them in assessing their needs, and provide the required assistance or supported referral and follow up.
2- Conducts home visits and assists medical visits.
3- Distributes supplementary nutrition.
4- Coordinates with community service providers in order to achieve an interaction and cooperation with CBR centers and NGO organizations  serving the disabled, the Gaza Deaf Club, and the PNA ministries of Social Welfare and Health.
5- Sign language translation.
6- Physical support and counseling.
7- Conducts awareness and educational workshops.
