The Alexandria International Model United Nations 2006:    The World Stands Corrected…

Sustainable Development Association (SDA) Press Release

"The United Nations itself was created in the belief that dialogue can triumph over discord, that diversity is a universal virtue and that the peoples of the world are far more united by common fate than they are divided by their separate identities"
- Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

What would you do if you were responsible for making decisions that could affect the security of the world as we know it? This is a question that a team of 130 students from Alexandria asked themselves as they gathered together to take part in the Alexandria International Model United Nations (AIMUN) 2006. These students have spent the last six months being trained to put themselves in the shoes of the world's decision makers, from March 14h to the 18th, they attended a conference in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina as if they were those decision makers themselves.

Half of the students took part in a crisis meeting of the United Nations Security Council, in which delegates from the permanent member and observer states addressed a world security crisis; the other half as representatives of the High Level Group for Alliance of Civilisations, in which they discussed how to resolve issues of distrust, fear, and misunderstanding between Islamic and Western societies. Each group, after intense negotiation, came to a final resolution, which, we hope, will result in the beginnings of a paradigm of mutual respect between civilizations here in Alexandria and beyond.

Not only is the AIMUN an innovative educational tool that allows young people to gain useful skills for the future, but it also gives these young people a voice, allowing their optimism and energy to come through and address some of the most pressing issues of the modern era.

The AIMUN is coordinated by the Sustainable Development Association (SDA), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Alexandria, working in addressing issues of youth unemployment in the region. AIMUN is one of the many training courses the organization provides to young people, to prepare them for the world of work.

Best Regards,

SDA Team
