Environmental Development

Mission:

Create widespread local and international awareness and appreciation for the unique natural environment
of the UAE and energize a commitment for its protection

Objectives:
Increase awareness among Emiratis about the value of the UAE environment and ways of preserving it.
Improve the capacity of Emiratis and the UAE to conduct high level environmental research and teaching.
Preserve and promote UAE "traditional knowledge".
Assist the process of creating world renowned natural reserves in the UAE.  
2009 Programmes:
Support for Environment Non Profit Organizations
The Emirates Foundation invites non-profit environmental organizations and associations to submit a proposal to expand an existing project, launch and run a new programme, and/or strengthen their organization.

Applications should be submitted before May 31st, 2009.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The Emirates Foundation, in association with partner ExxonMobil, announces a set of projects to promote energy efficiency and conservation in the United Arab Emirates.
Research in Energy Efficiency Grants
Energy is essential for growing the local and the global economy. Improving energy efficiency can slow the depletion of valuable resources, reduce costs, and reduce emissions – benefiting businesses, consumers, and the environment. The need exists to identify potential efficiency improvements; promote public, government, and business awareness; and increase national capacity to achieve and sustain these benefits. All research proposals need to undergo internal review and evaluation by the university/institutional research committee. All internally evaluated proposals along with the completed evaluation form for each proposal need to be submitted by the research sector division of the relevant university/institution to enviroresearch@emiratesfoundation.ae by June 15 2009 and the second round of applications will be accepted until October 1st, 2009.

Research proposals applications will be reviewed by an Environmental Review Committee which consists of teams of independent and professional scholars and practitioners working in the relevant field.

Public Awareness Grants
The Energy Efficiency Public Awareness grant aims to increase knowledge and promote energy efficiency best practices to community members, businesses and government entities. The Foundation encourages proposals that will raise public awareness through innovative communications techniques including print, broadcast, Internet and handheld devices. Organizations or groups are eligible to apply for full or partial funding.

Energy Efficiency Training Grants
This grants program supports students and professionals to attend relevant workshops, seminars, conferences and training sessions on energy efficiency. Grants will cover the expenses of travel, accommodation, registration and incidental fees of workshop and conference attendance.

Energy Efficiency Conference Support Grants
The aim of these grants is to provide partial or full support for planned conferences and workshops to take place in the UAE on energy efficiency in order to enhance the event's professional quality, participation, communications, or impact.

Energy Efficiency Local Initiatives Grants
The Emirates Foundation announces a new competition in Energy Efficiency Local Initiatives. The aim is to encourage and strengthen existing projects that seek to lower the current rates of energy consumption and provide effective ways to engage individuals, communities, and the general public in reducing energy use in their homes, offices or schools.

Emirates Foundation Green Awareness In The Media Awards
The Emirates Foundation is inviting individuals or organizations to submit proposals to create valuable environmental materials about the UAE that can benefit the public and contribute to efforts within the country on raising conservational awareness. These materials should be aimed for public consumption and can be in the form of print, film or broadcast media.

The Emirates Foundation (EF) is committed to supporting scientific research as part of its effort to promote technological and scientific advancement in the United Arab Emirates.


Emirates Foundation Sponsored Environmental Internships
The Emirates Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of Environmental Internships project to expose young UAE national who are studying in different disciplines of environmental Sciences to professional opportunities in the environmental field in the United Arab Emirates. The project aims to identify enthusiastic candidates and partner them with relevant environmental organizations.

The Emirates Foundation will pay the interns a stipend of AED 8,000 for undergraduates and AED 10,000 for graduates per month. An honorarium of AED 2,000 will also be paid to the field supervisor for each successful placement of the candidate.


Ph.D. Fellowships Programme
Competence in environmental management is a key component of national development and a high priority for UAE leadership. One of the Emirates Foundation's core objectives is to help build a cadre of UAE advanced students and accomplished professionals to contribute to knowledge, understanding and management of the country's environmental challenges. In a competitive process, the Emirates Foundation will fund talented UAE nationals to complete their PhD degrees at high caliber international universities in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Planning.

Research proposals applications will be reviewed by a Scientific and Technological Review Committee which consists of teams of independent and professional scholars and practitioners working in the relevant field. Awards will be announced in July and November 2008.


Support for Environmental Non-Profit Organization
The Emirates Foundation is inviting non-profit environmental organizations and associations to submit a proposal to expand an existing project, launch and run a new programme, and/or strengthen their organization.

The aim of this project is to strengthen the presence and role of non-profit organizations working for the betterment of UAE’s environment by funding their projects that seek to build the nation’s capacity to address and resolve environmental issues.

2006 - 2007 Highlights:
EnviroFone 
The Emirates Foundation sponsored the EnviroFone Schools Project in 2007. The project is designed to create awareness of the benefits of recycling mobile telephones; encouraging the collection of old used mobiles as examples of how the environment can be protected.
