Rotary Helen Keller Talking Book Library
History and Background
This project is a brain child of Prof. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, who has been compassionate to the cause of services for the Persons with Disabilities, particularly the Visually Impaired Persons. The project reaches out to thousands of Visually Impaired Persons across the South Tamilnadu, providing them with the “Power of Knowledge” and “Empowering them with Qualitative Life Style”. 
   
The project is being implemented by the Helen Keller Service Society for the Disabled, Helen-Keller.org a Voluntary Non-Governmental Organisation, which was established in the year 1979 and working for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons in Tamilnadu. It is a Registered Organisation and Recognized by the Government and the Public for its valuable service programs. The organisation is serving the Disabled Persons in the field of Education, Health, Vocational Training, Community Based Rehabilitation, Eye Care and Prevention of Blindness apart from Training and Employment Projects.

The organisation is widely acclaimed for its professional services to the Disabled persons, which is extended with compassion. The service of the organisation has been rewarded awards and accolades by the Government both at the National Level and State Level apart from many other bodies. The outstanding Awards include:
 
  
  Best Service Institution for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons – 2005
    – National Award – Government of India.   
 
  Best Service Institution – 1984 – 85   
  - State Award – Govt. of Tamilnadu.   
 
  Best Employer of the Physically Handicapped – 1980   
  - State Award – Govt. of Tamilnadu.  
 
 
 Rotary Helen Keller Talking Book Library stands out as a classic example of positive International partnership with a Professional Service delivery, as the project was established with the support of The Rotary Foundation of The Rotary International through a Matching Grant Project of a one time grant of Rs. 26 Lakhs with the efforts of the Rotary Club of Greece, Rotary District 7120, New York, USA and the Rotary Club of Madurai Mid -Town, Rotary District 3000, Madurai, with help of Past District Governor, Rtn. C. Basker.  
 
 ROHTALK is the only professional Library established to Modern Standards in the Entire South India. The Project has a modern Sound Recording Studio with Digital Computerized Sound Recording Professional Equipments, High Quality Cassette Duplicators and Sound Reproduction Equipments. Talking Books are available in Audio Cassette / CD Cassette Format both in English & Tamil Language. ROHTALK extends its support to thousands of Visually Impaired Persons and for many Institutions which work for the Visually Impaired Persons like Schools, Colleges and NGO’s.
  
 
  Highlights of ROHTALK
  
 It was Inaugurated and Dedicated to the Nation by His Excellency, The Governor of Tamilnadu on 20th Jan 2003.
The Project has won a Special acclaim from His Excellency Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam, The President of India.
It is the First of its kind in the entire South India, established to professional standards.
It has one of the widest collections of Talking Books in English and Tamil Language catering to all sections of the Visually Impaired Persons.
