Asia-Pacific Non-Government Organization on Drug and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASPAC-NGO)
History and Background

Drug problem is the worldwide problem that needs the coordination from concerned countries in preventing and solving the problems. The involvement is necessary not only from government sector, but also from private sector, especially from NGOs. However, many NGOs in some countries have insufficient knowledge and less experience on drug prevention and solution.
Together with the rapid change of drug problems, ASPAC-NGO, therefore, sees that the building up of coordination network on technical drug knowledge by using information technology would support the exchange of information, news, technical knowledge and technology on drug prevention and solution among countries. It also strengthens the cooperation among NGOs resulting in more effectiveness of drug prevention and solution measures.

The Asia-Pacific NGO Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASPAC-NGO Committee) was, therefore, established in Bangkok on November 9, 1996 following the recommendations Made at the 4th ASEAN NGO''s workshop, held in August 1993 in Bangkok, and at the NGO WORLD FORUM also held in Bangkok in December 1994. Founding members pledge to work together in collaboration with IFNGO and U.N. agencies to strengthen and to unite efforts on NGO''s in Asia-Pacific Region in the fight against drug. ASPAC-NGO shall be a non-profit organization.
