Association PROI is a non-governmental organization based in Sarajevo, with a branch office in Brcko District of B&H. The organization was established by a group of former addicts, their families, and health care professionals who had participated in their treatment. The organization was registered at the Ministry of Justice and Canton Sarajevo Administration Department (No. 521, register II. in November 2001) as a not-for-profit organization. At this time, 13 individuals have been employed in the organization. Association PROI provides advice and support to drug addicts and their families. It not only helps addicts get treatment but also aids in reunification with their families and reintegration into the community after treatment. The organization encourages and utilises evidence-based methods of prevention of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, and other blood borne infections among drug users. Association PROI also works with high schools to educate youth about drug abuse and related harm. In May 2005, Association PROI established a residential therapeutic community for the treatment and rehabilitation of addicts near Kakanj, a small village about 60 kilometres from Sarajevo. Association PROI cooperates with the Drug Addiction Department of Kosevo hospital in Sarajevo, the Cantonal Centre for Fight Drug Addiction in Zenica, the Health Department of District Brcko, the Ministry of Health, and other government agencies. Since 2004 Association PROI has been an active member of the National Coordination Mechanism (CCM) for implementation of a Global Fund programme to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. At the regional level, it cooperates with the NGOs "Veza" from Belgrade and NE-OVISNOST from Osijek. On the international level, Association PROI is affiliated with Daytop and Support Centres International, based in the USA, and it is an associated member of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC).
