The activities of AFRODAD are aimed at informing and increasing policy responses, while enhancing the role of civil society in influencing such responses, in debt and development issues. AFRODAD’s work is centered on the following programmes:
Research and Policy Analysis
This enables AFRODAD to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying causes of the debt problem, contributory institutional mechanisms, and the responsibility of stakeholders (creditors and debtor institutions and beneficiaries).
The Research Program at AFRODAD provides the fundamental framework for an in-depth understanding of the African debt burden and its implications to related development issues. The results of this research are used to support the lobby and advocacy work undertaken by AFRODAD, its Affiliates and Civil Society.
Working with our Affiliates and Coalition partners, dedicated Researchers and Consultants collect and conduct up-to-date research and analyses defining policy agenda issues, presenting policy critiques, initiating and coordinating policy dialogue and networking with all key institutions involved in the processes of development.
Lobby and Advocacy
AFRODAD works in collaboration with other networks from within Africa and beyond in promoting the ongoing global campaign for sustainable debt. Policy change is the primary focus.
AFRODAD’s mission is to empower the voice of Civil Society to engage policy makers at the national, sub-regional, regional and international levels on the issues of Debt and Economic Justice. Relying on the Research Department’s contribution to the knowledge base, the Lobby and Advocacy Program facilitates informed dialogue between Civil Society Organizations and Governments in both the North and the South.
Lobby and Advocacy efforts continuously attempt to secure the adoption of policies and measures by African governments and their creditors for the appropriate, efficient and effective use of future loan resources and to redress the current and past structural power imbalances that exist between creditors and debtors.
Information and Dialogue
Based on research findings, information is packaged for different audiences for use in education, advocacy and lobbying, and policy formulation towards sustainable debt solutions.
Knowledge is the key to promote positive change and access to it is critical. AFRODAD’s Information and Communications Department collects and disseminates information on all issues relating to debt and development produced by AFRODAD, its Affiliates and Country Coalitions. Its core function is to package and/or repackage information and intellectual material in various ways appropriate to maximize the reach on target audiences and to monitor the impact of the organization''s programs.
Taking advantage of the new Internet Communication Technology, AFRODAD is committed to employing knowledgeable staff and up-to-date technology to design and provide a variety of communication tools to achieve its goal.
