About Ecojustice
Ecojustice, formerly Sierra Legal Defence Fund goes to court to defend the right of Canadians to a healthy environment. As Canada''s largest and foremost non-profit environmental law organization our trusted voice in the courts enables citizens to expose lawbreakers and hold governments accountable, all while setting powerful precedents for clean water, natural spaces, healthy communities and for global warming solutions.
After nearly 17 years of fighting for environmental justice, in September 2007 we officially changed our name from Sierra Legal Defence Fund to: Ecojustice Canada. It is a name that clearly reflects the environmental and legal elements of our work and, equally important, it differentiates us from other organizations.
While our name and look has changed, our work remains the same. We have carried on taking polluters to court and continue to fight for the right of all Canadians to a healthy environment.
History
Ecojustice is an independent, non-profit organization supported by 30,000 Canadians. Our lawyers and scientists provide the expertise that citizens and groups need to take polluters to court and ensure that governments enforce our environmental laws.
Founded in 1990 as Sierra Legal Defence Fund, Ecojustice has grown from a team of two in a cramped Vancouver office to a national force, including more than a dozen staff lawyers and scientists in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary.
This growth has been fuelled by a record of success: landmark victories at all levels of court and a talent for shaping the policy and practice of governments – municipal, provincial, federal and international.
After nearly 17 years of fighting for environmental justice, Sierra Legal officially changed its name to Ecojustice Canada in September 2007.
