The Third World Group
Mechanism of Operation

Understanding the needs of those in our immediate surrounding is harder than what we are led to believe. Growing up in a sheltered environment, one will never acknowledge the harsh realities of his own society. On the other hand, growing up on the other end of the spectrum, a hard unfair life is just what one grows up to expect.

To notice these anomalies, one has to expose himself to a certain way of life.

The volunteers that founded the Third World Group achieved this by first working abroad and working with the Missionaries of Charity. In Malta they located an area where their intervention was needed most and worked there. Through the years they changed both areas and the type of work, always striving to dedicate their energies to any subgroup that silently was pleading for someone to help it.

This day, always keeping in mind the tracks on which it started rolling, the group is still working with emarginated societies. The bulk of our work through the year is done with children. Most of these children are growing up in ''the other end of the spectrum''. Their life is nothing like what it should be, where our harshest problems are their daily bread and butter.

However, we do not do any counselling sessions or anything like that. Our work is done from young volunteers most of whom have no experience at all with working in such an environment, but are all enthusiastic about life. Here we gather around fifty children and present them with activities such as crafts, drama, reading, playing or cooking some sweets, once or twice a week.

Through these activities, our main aim is to provide a safe, fun and educational environment where the children can experience a stressless hour away from their hectic life.

Beside this work, we as a group also try to educate the public in issues like ''Cultural Differences''. This is done through awareness raising activities organised by our group or by joining our forces with other NGO''s organising such activities.

Some activities were the sleepover in Freedom Square, Valletta,  under tents, which was done as a silent protest against detention centres. Our participation in ''Reclaim the World'', an activity to help raise awareness about the negative effects of economic globalization. Our participation in ''WorldFest'', an activity which raises awareness about Fair Trade, and then there are our weekly meetings, open to the public, were we present and discuss issues such as the current situation in selected countries, domestic violence, etc.

The funny thing about this work is that it is addictive as much as it is rewarding. Always striving to deliver more, but limited in our number, we our inviting you to share this gratifying experience with us. Thus if you deem yourself a committed person, interested in our work and ready to work in a community why don''t you consider joining this group?
