The Culture and Free Thought Association (CFTA)
History and Background

The Culture and Free Thought Association (CFTA):
The association is working within the community to encourage social development through cultural, health and educational programmes.
 Its aims are to promote ideas of civil society along with its basic values of equality, co-operation and democracy within all aspects of Palestinian life.  CFTA was established in 1992 by five women from political organizations in the Gaza Strip in conjunction with the European Union and the French NGO, Enfants Refuges du Monde.
They came together to establish five autonomous centers which focus on the needs of the Palestinian people.
Today CFTA is involved in many projects within and out of the five centres located in Khan Yonis.  It also employs and trains more than fifty staff.
CFTA's main objectives are:
• to develop and ameliorate the Palestinian woman’s conditions through training and rehabilitation activities;
• to overcome social constraints and to try to meet women's needs;
• to improve the economical situation through job opportunities;
• to sponsor women in gaining their rights and to reduce the suffering of women;
• to improve the local potential and resources;
• to improve the protection of children;
• to compensate for the collapse of the education system;
• to prepare the adolescents to structure their lives;
• to facilitate and improve gender inter-relationships;
• to involve the community;
• to revitalize Palestinian heritage and culture.
