History and Background

1- Foundation :
BSU is a national, nonpolitical, nonprofit and voluntary organization established for the interest of community development, with a special focus on youth and children. The organization has been founded by a group of Somali students from universities and commits itself to promote viable programs that mainly focus on education, peace, culture, reconciliation and development, so as to ensure society wellbeing educationally, socially, peacefully, culturally and economically.

2- Target Groups :
BSU target groups are the youth in the public realm, the child and the national public in general. Along with that, BSU virtual works are for orientation to develop people’s psycho-social ethics and cultural ethos. Thus, the use of mass media as mechanism for action is off course necessary.

Visison :
BSU has been established to achieve certain planning objectives as to realize its organization vision as:
- Peaceful social life and development of Somali society.
- A society based on knowledge, consultation, and justice where by all persons “live together in harmony” and with equal opportunities, respect and trust.
- Civilized Somali society as a result of “social change” through promotion of educational programs.

Mission :
The core of BSU mission is the organization’s commitment that attaches credence to education as a primary means of peaceful co-existence, harmony and cultural development of the community in a given society which places a particular emphasis on youth, education, peace and social reconciliation, by setting specific objectives and relevant concrete goals to enhance community development educationally, socially, economically and culturally.

However, BSU seeks to set psycho-social learning approaches through mass orientation on the psychology and social well-being of the Somali people to build local support for non violence and that endorse the values of respect for diversity and an understanding of shared human values locally, regionally and globally.

Objective :
- Provide opportunities of non formal education with the youth have grown above the school prime age, due to effects of Somali civil wars that have started in 1990.
- Give the poor / displaced children access to learning.
- Open youth reintegration training for demobilization purpose
- Raise mass awareness against the local social conflicts for reconciliation.
- Tackle harmful customs in the Somali or African cultures.
