The Women Organization to Combat Illiteracy (WOCI) was established in 1972 as a non-governmental not for profit Organization under the auspices of Ministry of Social Development. It started its activities in Amman and then expanded to cover many of the very impoverished urban and rural communities of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The organization chose to establish its centers where its services proved most needed, therefore, the primary areas of concern were in Baq’a Camp, Taibeh town and Abu Nusier Housing Complex.
WOCI is committed to creating positive change in the lives of Jordanian women through achieving the following goals:
• To fight illiteracy among women in Jordan in co-operation with the ministry of Education and other parties. As well, to encourage families to keep their children, especially their daughters, in school till the age 18.
• To promote the philosophy, which states that access to education, is a basic human right.
• To promote Human Rights Education among youth and women.
• To upgrade women’s skills in light manual industries and other skills of demand in market.
• To facilitate the full and effective digital inclusion of women in Jordan for them to become actively engaged with information and communications technology
• To improve women’s reproductive health and children status by providing women with necessary information on productive health and child development issues.
• To contribute to the efforts of protecting and conserving the environment; and to raise community awareness on water issues.
