The IAIS was founded in Federal Germany in 1981 as an international non profit association, based at Bremen University, and registered in the NGO's index under VR 3626. It aims at addressing the problems arising from the differences of systems of values in the West and in the so-called Third World, in view of attempting to scholarly studying the reasons of the tensions arising from said differences and thus pave the way to transform them into reciprocal cognitive curiosity and fruitful inter-cultural interaction.
The statues of this organization stipulate that any scholar wishing to adhere to it should prove being a member of an academic or research institution and hold relevant publications in his/her specialization. As a non profit organization the IAIS has been granted a special consultative status in the Social and Economic Council of the United Nations.
