Friends of Archaeology
History and Background

The Friends of Archaeology (FoA) in Jordan was founded in 1958 by a small group of Jordanian and non- Jordanian archaeologists and residents who wanted to expand awareness and enjoyment of Jordan’s rich heritage among the general public.
Today, FoA’s role is more important than ever because of several related factors.  In recent years, the country has seen a vast increase in the number of excavated and surveyed archaeological sites that need protection, conservation and interpretation.  At the same time, Jordan has experienced a sharp increase in the number of visitors and tourism-related construction at or near archaeological sites.  This requires diligent and collective efforts by both public and private sectors to ensure that heritage protection and economic expansion take place hand – in – hand.
Friends of Archaeology works with all categories of the the communittee either in the city, Badia or governerates, where we try to spread awarness about the importance of our cultural heritage and archaeological sites among people especially thoughs who lives next to the archaeological sites and works in the filed of tourism services.
