Activities and Programs

Current Activities
• Field trips to archaeological sites in Jordan, guided by experts.
• Lectures in English and Arabic on subjects related to Archaeology and Cultural Heritage.
• Trips to neighboring and other countries to explore sites of archeological and cultural interest.
• The FoA newsletter, Ancient Jordan, and monthly activities updates, are sent to all members, archaeological centers, cultural centers and university departments.
• Public Awareness projects activities and articles: 
  For the public at large: include advertisements in the main newspapers and public service announcements, which aims to spread awareness about our national heritage and how we can protect it for the coming generations.
For school children: include special meeting and activities for schoolteachers, students and parents.
Heritage days activities: in cooperation with schools we try to revive some archaeological sites and important events happened in the past through a main event in these sites.

Future Plans
While continuing its established activities, the FoA is implementing new initiatives related mainly to the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage sites and their wider environmental contexts. These comprise:

• Building a national coalition of NGO’s working for protection of cultural and natural heritage.
• Working with other relevant parties to develop a national parks management and protection system in Jordan.
• Establishing a network of volunteers that would help in developing FoA activities.
• Developing educational materials and programs for teachers and students.
• Developing closer links with the Jordanian and international corporate communities, especially on issues related to the protection of antiquities.
• Expanding the activities of FoA to include subjects related to architecture and arts.

1- Awareness Archaeological Campaign:
Started in 2002 and it aims at Spreading awareness among people in general about the importance of the Jordanian Cultural heritage and archaeological sites through a series of advertisements and slogans that was published in the main three newspapers (Al-Rai, Al-Doustour and Al-Arab alyoum).
Target group: Public at Large
Funding: Fastlink in cooperation with the three newspapers
Status: This project ended at June 2004

2- Annual Awareness  Archaeological Campaign:

Started in 2003 and it aims to To spread awareness among the young generation (students) about the importance of the archaeological sites in Jordan and how to preserve them and protect them through conducting a series of lectures, workshops, and field trips.
Target group: Schools
Funding: Japanese Embassy in Amman
Status: This project still going on but on a very small scale due to lack of funding.

3- Discover Islamic Art – Virtual Museum:
Started in 2004 and it aims to establish a Website specialized in Islamic Art, this site will include the most important archaeological sites and artifacts from 14 Mediterranean and European countries, these monuments and artifacts will cover the period from the Umayyads till the end of the Ottoman period.
Target group: Specialists and students and public at large all around the world.
Funding: European Commission and Museum With No Frontiers Society
Status: This project will be finalized and launched in May 2007

4- Renovation of Humayma room in the Aqaba museum and Humayma Visitor Center:
Started in 2004 and it aims to renovate this exhibition room, where all show cases, lightning, floor, and painting of the room will be changed and all problems of humidity and leakage will be solved.
Target group: Visitors of the Aqaba museum (local community and tourists)
Funding:  Canadian Embassy in Amman
Status: This project will end in February 2006

New Ideas:
1- National Heritage Days:
This project aims at spreading awareness about the importance of Jordanian archaeological sites and cultural heritage among people and especially school students through reviving every year an archaeological site, where the students themselves in cooperation with FoA prepare a festival in this archaeological site concentrating on the main historical events happened at this site. Also lectures about this site could be presented by specialists giving more information about this site and its importance.
Objectives; Spreading awareness among people in general about the importance of the Jordanian Cultural heritage and archaeological sites

Objectives; To create a new generation who knows the importance of our history and heritage and try to protect and preserve it for the coming generations.

3- Information panels at the Archeological sites:
This project aims at unifying the information panels in all archeological sites in Jordan, where we can through the specialists in the society and in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities to write the main and important information about each site which will help the visitor to understand the history of the site and its importance.
Objectives; Tourism development and to encourage tourists from all over the world and the local community to visit the archaeological sites in Jordan and to get the right information about each site.

Friend of Archaeology is ready to adopt any of these projects or other projects that aims at spreading awareness among people about the importance of our cultural heritage and those which helps Jordan in developing the tourism sector which is very important for the economy of Jordan.
