International Roundtables

Dialogue and conversations that inspire critical analysis and deepening of the understanding of the current global contexts and its impact on the political, social, cultural and economic environment within which civil society operates has been a major objective of El Taller. With many diverse view points and perspectives on democracy, human rights, development, state-civil society relationships, south-south/north south cooperation, El Taller continues to offer an open space for generating strategies, discussion, reflection  and creative thinking on the individual and collective actions that ngos in partnership with academia, other development agencies and social movements should aspire to implement.
The roundtables have been a tool to challenge, create synergy and focus on pertinent issues that ngos address. The roundtables explore the implications of the universal vision based on the dominant idea of rationality, secularism and progress which have dispossessed the majority, denigrated the women and destroyed other cultures and civilizations. They seek to challenge while at the same time create a more inclusive perception and praxis in democracy, human rights, environment, the media and the United Nations Charter.

The scheduled international roundtables for the next three years will revolve around central themes as identified by El Taller together with the working groups and partners.

The next series for the coming months will focus on Democracy. The specific axis will be:

Law, philosophy, history;
Development, knowledge and Information;
Power, control and Manipulation;
Colonization and Occupation;
Religions and civil society;
And Women;
Human rights and the rule of law;
Islam, identity, minorities and racism;
Globalization, the market and poverty;
As a value; the culture of democracy;
Alternatives and other systems of democracy.
