New Excavations at The Bubastion Temple - Kom El Dekkah Symposium - Alexandria Excavation Season 2010

            The Calligraphy center affiliated to Bibliotheca Alexandrina is organizing, in cooperation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities, a symposium on the new excavations which were undertaken by the Supreme Council of Antiquities; and led to the discovery of the Bubastion Temple in Kom El Dekkah; a temple dedicated to the goddess Bastet.

            The temple dates back to the reign of queen Berenice at the beginning of the Ptolemaic period in Egypt, and it was used up to the end of the 2^nd century AD. This discovery is considered to be one of the most important archaeological discoveries not only in Alexandria but also in Egypt during the last few years, as the establishment of this temple is related to the establishment of the Ptolemaic capital itself.

            The new discovery revealed a huge number of important masterpieces, whether statues of the goddess Bastet herself depicted as a cat, or of other Egyptian gods and goddesses such as Harpocrates, Nefer Atum and Isis. This shed light on important aspects of the civilization, especially the religious and artistic aspects during this important period of Egyptian history.
